An endangered species of giant fish with circular wings, which was accidentally caught by fishermen in Cambodia, was released today unharmed into the Mekong River.
The ‘monster-shaped’ female is the rarest aquatic species in Southeast Asia and was accidentally caught last week in Stung Treng province when it swallowed a fish on a hook, according to fishermen.
The Mekong River fishermen said they were shocked when they pulled the 180-pound rare fish, which was later studied by scientists.
A group of American experts on the Mekong River worked with fishermen to free the circular fish from the hook and return it to the river.
The giant Mekong River is considered the artery of Asia and is a primary habitat for countless species in the region.
The researchers said that the remote location where the species was caught had places up to 80 meters deep and it is believed that there are even larger species.
More than 1,000 aquatic species live in the Mekong and the circular rana is not the only turbid water giant.
Some species of catfish found here reach up to three meters in length weighing up to 270 kilograms.
