People in Bucha continue to search for the bodies of their relatives, massacred by the Russian army when it took control of the Ukrainian city.
BBC reporters reporting from the area show how a police chief already has to spend his work day looking for dead bodies buried or dumped around the city.
He receives phone calls from citizens asking for their loved ones. A location, some details, a phone number and he goes out on the field.
Before the Russians came, Lobas was an ordinary local police chief dealing with crime in the city. Since Bucha’s liberation from the Russians, he has spent his days in an abandoned classroom at the school, coordinating the massive operation to find the dead.
He has on the table the map of Bucha, a once peaceful and little-known suburb of Kiev, which is now a giant crime scene.
The area was occupied by Russian forces for a month as they attempted to attack Kiev and its liberation a little over a week ago launched a slow and painful process of revealing horrors.
Every time the phone rings, Lobas looks at the map and writes down the information he receives. The day before, he says, we found 64 bodies, while now a mass grave is being excavated nearby and the number of victims is expected to be high.
Lobas occasionally stopped to go to the school playground to smoke a cigarette, but even these moments were interrupted by the problems they reported regarding the collection of corpses.
One of the vans transporting the bodies to the morgue had stuck in the mud, while it was raining in the city, the journalist confesses. There are few vans and many corpses, so local officials are looking for a tractor as an alternative solution.
Lobas handles the most severe cases. “When people are shot in the head with their hands tied behind their backs or when their bodies are burned, I go to the scene,” he said.
Volodymyr and Serhiy had lost contact with Vitaliyn a month earlier when the Russians took control of Bucha and communications with him were cut off. They searched in vain on social media to find evidence that he was alive.
After searches and police raiding the apartment destroyed by Russian soldiers, they saw blood stains on the pillow and on the walls near the bed. Amid the mess on the floor were two bullet casings, while the victim was found outside the house, near the forest.
