An increase in new cases of COVID-19 in Kosovo is announced

During the meeting of the Committee for coordination and assessment of the situation with COVID-19, the acting Minister of Health, Armend Zemaj, said that the pandemic situation is under control and that “there is no tendency for alarm”.

He said that in the last two weeks there has been a symbolic decrease of new cases, but added that during this week “there are initial signs of an increase in positive cases”.

Zemaj said that, according to projections of the National Institute of Public Health (NIPHK), the number of patients will range from 312 to 321 cases – an average of 317 cases per 100 inhabitants – which, according to him, would represent an increase of 6.9 percent , while the number of deaths, added Zemaj, from 4 to 5 deaths per day, with an average of 4 deaths – with a decrease of 19.2%.

The director of NIPHK, Naser Ramadani, said that all preparations have been made for the coronavirus vaccination campaign and that the first contingent of vaccines that will arrive in Kosovo is expected to be from the manufacturers AstraZeneca and the University of Oxford.

Ramadan did not indicate when this vaccine contingent will arrive, but, earlier, officials have said they are expected to arrive in late February or early March.

Kosovo is expected to receive a total of 100,800 doses of vaccine through the COVAX program, which aims to distribute coronavirus vaccines to developing countries.

Kosovo is the last in the region in terms of launching vaccination against COVID-19, as such campaigns have already started in Albania, Serbia, Northern Macedonia and Montenegro.

The incumbent government of Kosovo has said that it has provided 535,000 doses of the vaccine to the American company, Pfizer, but from this company, at the end of last week, they told Radio Free Europe that are still in negotiations with official Pristina, so that the latter has access to the vaccine./REL/
