Several mounds and a lead sarcophagus dating from the 14th century have been discovered by archaeologists at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris following the devastating 2019 fire.
The French Ministry of Culture said the graves were of “high scientific quality” and were discovered during preparatory work for the reconstruction of the collapsed peak of the ancient church.
They added that among the mounds was a “lead sarcophagus in human form preserved in perfect condition.”
The coffin was prepared for a “high figure” and dates back to the 1300s, since the construction of the cathedral.
Elements of sculptures and paintings as part of 13th-century church decor were also found at the site.
French researchers said they had carried out archeological tests before construction work began on the new peak supporters.
The ministry said the investigation into the new revelations had been extended until March 25.
