Former Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi has received an anonymous envelope with two bullets inside it, members of his Italia Viva party said on social media.
The news has been massively condemned by Italian politicians, including the Northern Legion and the Five Star Movement, who have expressed their opposition to threats against politicians.
“It’s time to say enough about this policy of violence and hatred,” said Teresa Bellanova, deputy minister and member of Italia Viva. The President of the Chamber of Deputies, Maria Elisabetta Casellati, also called the former Prime Minister to express her solidarity.
“Political dissatisfaction, although severe, cannot and should not degenerate into threats and violence,” added Minister Mara Carfagna. Renzi himself, in a Facebook post after the myriad of online support, said: Thank you all. “Let us all move forward, with freedom and courage.”
Renzi served as Italy’s prime minister from 2014 to 2016 and remains in the Senate as the leader of Italia Viva, a small group split from the Democratic Party. In January, his party’s decision to leave the coalition government led to the resignation of Giuseppe Contes and plunged Italy into political crisis.
Other politicians in Italy, including former prime ministers Silvio Berlusconi and Mario Monti, have previously received anonymous envelopes of bullets.
