President Ilir Meta spoke with civil society representatives regarding the April 25 elections, stressing that there must be confidence in the power of the vote.
During the online activity, Meta said that he does not claim elections as in Denmark or Sweden, but at least to resemble Kosovo or Northern Macedonia. The President called on every citizen who is indifferent and does not vote not to complain as he has no moral right.
The same was said of those who sell the vote saying they lose the right to demand accountability.
“Two are my most important tasks to give the maximum contribution to facing the pandemic and secondly to serve the guarantee of free and democratic elections, which are the basis of everything for our country and our citizens.
I’m not naive to claim elections like in Denmark or Sweden, at the moment. In the future why not. But we have all the possibilities as a society, people and institutions, at least to resemble Kosovo with the last elections, or Northern Macedonia.
One topic that should have been included is that relating to electoral crime and criminal offenses affecting the democratic electoral system. We need to pay more attention to informing people. Clarifying the many elements that have to do with informing the voter and how he or she will vote, and it is important that we all make our citizens aware that in a democratic system, power is the vote. This is a power to be relied upon.
Every demotivation, every indifference does not serve not only democracy, but also the citizen to be more demanding to be more active. I am convinced that every citizen who does not vote, morally has no right to complain.
Just like any citizen who exchanges his vote for certain favors and sells the vote, at that moment he has lost the right of accountability to the one who offered the money.
“So I think we need coordination to guarantee a process for our country to overcome one of the conditions for the opening of negotiations.” said among others President Meta.
