About 400 car accidents have occurred in the last ten months in the U.S. from assisted driving technology, said the local highway safety authority.
273 of them included Tesla vehicles, which had occurred in the period July 1, 2021 to May 15 this year, which resulted in at least six deaths and dozens of serious injuries, writes the Daily Mail.
Automotive companies revealed their figures following an order from regulators in June 2021, which required manufacturers and technology companies to report all accidents involving “assisted driving technology” as automated vehicles continue to be tested on public roads. .
The rest of the accidents were reported by other state-of-the-art manufacturers, in which 90 were Honda and 10 Subaru vehicles.
Fewer accidents were reported for companies such as Ford Motor, General Motors (GM), BMW, Volkswagen, Toyota, Hyundai and Porsche.
“New technologies promise to increase safety, but apparently we need to understand how these vehicles are performing in the real world and in real traffic situations,” said Road Administration chief Steven Cliff.
“The data raise more questions than they answer,” he added.
Tesla accounted for about 70 percent of the crashes, but Elon Musk’s company was justified by the fact that the company was the largest supplier of such vehicles in the US (830,000) and consequently the ‘defects’ would be the same.
Ford, GM and BMW companies have published similar figures but in sales have not achieved its success, Tesla justified.
Other models have only a few technology-assisted steering options, such as lane keeping and avoiding sudden turns, as well as slowing down or spotting congested traffic ahead.
The Japanese Honda complained to Reuters that they had not discovered any defects in their systems and that the reports were based on unverified customer statements.
Incidents are reported as such when the advanced steering systems are activated within 30 seconds before the accident and are reported within 24 hours to the US special agency.
The agency said it will now publish its data every month and not every year as previously predicted.
