Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said the Kremlin’s efforts to take control of a massive nuclear power plant were “terror on an unprecedented level.”
“Russian tanks knew they were firing directly at the station,” Zelensky claimed.
Zelensky likened the event to the 1986 disaster at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, the worst nuclear accident in the world. Thankfully, so far there is no indication that any of the reactors in Zaporizhia have been affected by the shelling this morning.
Also today, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) called for a halt to fighting around the facility.
He called on NATO to implement a no-fly zone over Ukraine, saying “an immediate closure of the skies over Ukraine is needed.” But the United States has banned the move earlier because it could spark a clash between U.S. forces and Russia.
This morning a fire broke out at the Zaporizhzia nuclear power plant by Russian forces. Ukrainian authorities later reported that background radiation levels were normal and the fire had not affected essential equipment.
