The United States has urged U.S. government officials in Belarus and their families to leave the country as fears of a Russian invasion of Ukraine grow.
The order came hours after Washington and Moscow clashed over Kiev at the UN Security Council. The US once again threatened to impose sanctions on wealthy Russian oligarchs if the former Soviet state was attacked.
The United States has also threatened Moscow with plans to mobilize a 30,000-strong military force in Belarus within weeks. The State Department warned Americans not to travel to the country “because of arbitrary law enforcement, the risk of detention and unusual and disturbing military gatherings along Belarus’ border with Ukraine.”
According to US data, in addition to 100 thousand troops on its border with Ukraine, Russia also has 5,000 troops in Belarus, a figure which it plans to multiply.
US Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield told the Security Council that the 30,000 Russian troops to be deployed there would be less than two hours north of Kiev. But her Russian counterpart, Vassily Nebenza, denied the allegations and spoke of a wave of hysteria in Washington, as she did not explain otherwise the request to convene the Security Council.
No Russian official, he said, has threatened to invade the former Soviet republic, adding that Ukrainians are being “brainwashed” by Western “Russophobia”. As for the presence of troops in Belarus, he did not deny it, but said that they are there for joint military exercises.
