The Australian Ministry of Health announced that they have registered the highest number of daily cases with the new coronavirus (COVID-19), while the country is struggling with the Omicron variant.
Over the past 24 hours, Australia reported 64,767 new cases, bringing the total number of cases to 612,106, of whom 2,289 people lost their lives.
The number of cases marks a significant increase these days, as yesterday 47,816 cases were reported, while on Monday, 37,239.
“With the Omicron variant, as we know, as the Chief of Medicine has said on several occasions now, this is a less serious but more contagious type,” said Prime Minister Scott Morrison after a cabinet meeting, adding: “As a result “We are dealing with much higher levels of cases.”
In an effort to counter the spread of Omicron, authorities have accelerated vaccination, particularly boosting vaccines. In a statement, Health Minister Greg Hunt said a record 176,223 booster vaccines were administered in Australia yesterday.
Australia has so far fully vaccinated 91.6 per cent of people over the age of 16, while 94.5 per cent of people have received their first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine.
