The White Stone that the small town of Ura Vajgurore once boasted about has become a curse for him. The beautiful hills that surrounded the city as a crown have disappeared as a result of the activity of dozens of quarries that erode them for years.
According to the National Agency of Natural Resources, the municipality of Dimali as it is called today Ura Vajgurore, is the most coveted in terms of quarries. There are 21 entities operating in this municipality and the use of this area has started since the 2000s with an unbridled intensity. The constant explosions on the construction sites, the work without previously wetting the place with water and without protective filters has turned the lives of these residents into hell. The alarming situation of air quality that inhabits the inhabitants of this area is also confirmed by a study conducted in 2018.
In the area called Rruga e Goricës, air pollution with dust particles reaches record levels of 630 micrograms / m3, almost 8 times higher than the EU standard and 4.5 times higher than the Albanian standard. Respiratory PM10 particles, which through respiration end up in the lungs of residents have also been found in very high values. More specifically in the measured days the amount of PM10 has resulted 290 micrograms / m3, while the Albanian norm is 60 micrograms and the EU standard is only 40 micrograms / m3.
According to experts, such levels of pollution should be considered a serious threat to the health of residents and may cause an increase in the number of deaths, an increase in heart disease or cancer. Such alarming levels of pollution are attributed to the quarry business for the fact that companies operate without protective filters.
