Monday marks the end of curfew for unvaccinated persons, which entered into force in Austria in November last year as part of the fight against COVID-19.
Prime Minister Karl Nehammer and Health Minister Wolfgang Muckstein briefed the public on the coronavirus epidemic.
Nehammer stated that despite the rapid spread of the Omicron variant in Austria, it did not cause a serious increase in the number of patients in the intensive care unit and hospitals.
Expressing that the events related to Omicron are being closely monitored, Nehammer said that from Monday 31 January the curfew for unvaccinated persons will be lifted.
Health Minister Muckstein said up to 30,000 new cases of COVID-19 were registered each day. He believes the Omicron wave will reach its highest level in the coming days and will continue with the strict measures already in place.
Muckstein said mandatory vaccination will help society prepare for possible variants of the coronavirus that may appear after Omicron.
Due to the significant increase in the number of patients in the intensive care unit during the period when the Delta variant of COVID-19 was dominant in Austria, the government established curfews for the unvaccinated in November 2021 and for the vaccinated in December.
Restrictions on vaccines have been lifted before the new year.
