An abandoned baby in temperatures down to -20C in Siberia is surviving, Russian authorities announced today.
The newborn was found by five teenagers in a cardboard box on a remote street near the village of Sosnovka in Novosibirsk on Friday, local media reported.
The girl was rushed to hospital by one of the teen’s parents where she was declared healthy.
Police are searching for her mother and have opened investigations into the attempted murder of a minor.
The teen’s parents even expressed a desire to adopt the baby but have to wait until the parents are found.
Speaking of the Russian daily NGS, the father of one of the teenagers Dmitry Litvinov, said the five friends went for a walk on Orthodox Christmas day.
“It was getting dark and they were lighting up their cell phones to see what was in the box,” Mr Litvinov said.
Inside was a baby girl with a ragged blanket and a bottle to drink.
He and his wife Anna had been called to the scene by their son Renat. The baby was then taken by car and taken to hospital.
They said the baby must have been only a few days old when they found him and thought he would not survive the cold.
Upon arrival at the hospital, a doctor examined the baby and warmed him by gently rubbing his arms and legs, according to a statement from the regional medical office.
The girl was reported to have regained her skin color and was declared healthy. She was later transferred to a children’s hospital where others are being cared for.
Speaking to the NGS network, Ms Litvinova said she and most of the hospital staff started crying when it was learned that the baby was in good health.
The couple have three sons and now want to adopt the child. Authorities said that if her parents were not found, the new parents would have to prepare the paperwork and complete the relevant courses needed for formal adoption.
