The President of the Democratic Party, Lulzim Basha, congratulated the new President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, on Tuesday afternoon.

In the vote in the General Assembly in Strasbourg over the end of the term of former President David Sassoli, who passed away last week, Metsola was elected president in the first round with 458 votes in the 705-seat parliament.
With the election of Roberta Metsola, it will be the third time a woman will sit in the post of head of the EP. Metsola at the head of the parliament where she previously served as vice president was elected on her birthday.
In a speech to MPs after the election, Metsola said she is proud of the responsibility given to her. “I promise that I will work and do my best for the interests of this Parliament and all EU citizens,” she said.
Metsola is a member of the European People’s Party (EPP) which is the largest political group in parliament and she was first elected MP in 2013 from Malta.
The mother of 4 children, 43-year-old Metsola is in the center-right and conservative line and before her duty as an MP she was a lawyer.
She specializes especially in European law. Appreciated for her role in resolving political disputes, Metsola has been widely criticized for her stance against abortion.
In the second half of his parliamentary term, Metsola will serve as president for 2.5 years.
