Authorities in Beijing have isolated more residents from their homes as part of efforts over the past three weeks to control the outbreak of a coronavirus pandemic in the Chinese capital. Seven areas of Beijing have been blocked for at least a week.
It also includes a wholesale food market, which closed indefinitely on Saturday due to the outbreak of the virus there.
Most of Beijing is not isolated, but the streets are quieter than usual as many shops are closed and people are working from home.
The new restrictions come as Shanghai, China’s largest city, has begun easing some restrictive measures after more than six weeks.
The two outbreaks in Beijing and Shanghai have focused on China’s zero-sum strategy with COVID-19 and the capacity to stem the flow of infections.
China registered 1,100 new cases of coronavirus on Monday, the National Health Commission said. Of these, about 800 are registered in Shanghai and 52 in Beijing.
The number of new infections in Shanghai has dropped for two weeks now, but the authorities have gradually lifted the restrictions, which has angered residents.
