Berisha: Today I am in front of you to greet a great event in the history of Albania and Europe. The pipeline through TAP has transported today the first 10 bits of gas to Italy. This is the pipeline of Europe without Russian gas. It is a great achievement for Europe, an achievement in which Albania and the government I headed played a definite role after Azerbaijan and the president of that country. To be clear, Albania’s defining role could only be TAP if it passed through the territory of Albania, where Russian gas could not pass. An extraordinary activity took place around this axiom. The biggest attempts were made to sabotage it so that Russia could take over the southern corridor. Major oppositions in all countries through which the pipeline passed except Albania appeared to increase to eliminate the TAP pipeline was created by 3 neighboring countries a real and virtual network called Italy-Turkey-Greece.
The gas would be mixed with Big Brother, with Russian gas. I told you, TAP could only be TAP if it crossed the territory of Albania. President Irham Aliyev expelled IGTGI from the race, which caused outrage. We continued with great patience the diplomatic efforts to convince our neighbors that everyone benefited from the tap, no one lost and that President Aliyev’s decision was positive. A great thanks and gratitude deserves today the former President of Italy Gergo Napolitano who overthrew the absolutely wrong attitudes of his state administration and became the promoter of a positive attitude of the Italian Republic towards this project. Thanks to Hillary Clinton. Throughout my 8 year agenda with Washington, 2 have been the major problems, NATO and TAP. Clinton never spoke in support of the project but by placing at its disposal its most qualified energy staff, it has given us invaluable assistance in continuing our diplomatic battle in favor of TAP. I have boundless gratitude for Albanian diplomats. Only for TAP, Sali Berisha was offered the largest sums, but he rejected them because I was convinced that Russian gas was not right for Europe.
The offer came directly from Gazprom.
