The ruling administration in the US is pushing forward policies that force companies to reduce the nicotine level of cigarettes sold domestically.
They say nicotine levels will be reduced to “non-addictive” levels, without clarifying what the supposed effects the new measure seeks to combat.
The measure will still take several years to take effect but will still significantly shake up the giant tobacco industry.
According to the British Daily Mail, initially the US Food and Drug Administration should make the official proposal of the new rules and wait for comments from the public.
The final rules should then be published.
At this point, tobacco companies will file lawsuits in order to delay the implementation of policies as much as possible, writes the American network. Wall Street Journal.
The initiative appears to be part of President Biden’s “anti-cancer” initiative, which would be the toughest anti-smoking initiative since 1998, when tobacco companies were forced to pay $ 200 billion in health costs to the United States.
But although nicotine is addictive to cigarettes or tobacco, the chemical itself does not cause cancer, heart disease or lung disease.
The US estimates that there are about 30.8 million smokers in the country, or about 12.5% of the population. The figure has risen somewhat during the 2020 pandemic isolations.
The amount of nicotine in cigarettes can be reduced by different methods like adapting to different types of tobacco leaves or by using different types of filters.
One of the big companies says it can reduce nicotine mass by genetic modification by up to 95%.
The reduction of nicotine in cigarettes was also followed by the Trump administration in 2017 but later the plans seemed to lose interest.
Experts say reducing nicotine could cause some 5 million smokers to quit the habit within a year, if implemented.
