“He will never win the heart and soul of the Ukrainian people”; Joe Biden’s speech at this difficult time for the Western world, when a democratic country has fallen prey to an unprovoked attack, should have been magnificent.
And yet there was another blunder of the American head of state. Biden seems to have confused Ukraine with Iran in his speech.
The 79-year-old leader, the oldest politician elected president of the United States, was in fact referring to the Russian occupation there when he said that “Putin may have surrounded Kiev with tanks, but he will not win the support of the Iranian people.”
As soon as he finished saying Iranian, Vice President Kamala Harris whispered behind his back saying: Ukrainian. So much so that comments flooded into social media. “Breaking: Biden announced the unconventional plan to win the heart and soul of the Iranian people in Kiev,” said one.
The President’s challenge was to show the Americans that he is at the forefront of the West’s response to the most tense period in relations with Russia since the end of the Cold War, 30 years ago.
His speech was accompanied by applause from lawmakers, many of whom waved Ukrainian flags, and some women members of Congress arrived dressed in the colors of the Ukrainian flag, yellow and blue.
