US Secretary of State Anthony Blinke said in Brussels that NATO was ready for war and to defend every inch of its member states’ territory, although, as he stressed, the alliance did not seek conflict.
The comments by US Secretary of State Antony Blinken came ahead of a meeting of NATO foreign ministers – which is taking place at a time when the Russian attack on Ukraine continues.
Although the allied countries have united unanimously against Russian aggression, they have not expressed readiness to close airspace over Ukraine. Ukrainian officials have urged the closure to avert Russian airstrikes, but the West fears it could drag it into the war.
Blinken: “Our alliance is defensive. We do not want conflict. But if that happens, if conflict comes to us, it will find us on alert. “We will react immediately in defense of any part of NATO territory.”
Blinken, along with NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg, also mentioned the attacks on a Ukrainian nuclear power plant in Zaporizhzhya, which Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky described as “nuclear terrorism.”
Stoltenberg condemned the attacks on civilians and said that the attack on the nuclear power plant shows “how reckless this war is, the importance of its end and the importance of Russia withdrawing troops and engaging in diplomatic efforts in good faith.”
