US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said he was “convinced” that Russian President Vladimir Putin would try to overthrow the Ukrainian government.
In an interview with the American broadcaster ABC, Blinken said that he was “part of the Russian plan” to attack the capital Kiev and other major cities in Ukraine, along with launching a multilateral attack on the country from the north, east and south.
Blinken stressed that an attack on a NATO member is an attack on all NATO members.
“The president has been very clear that we will defend every inch of NATO territory. “I think this is the strongest obstacle against President Putin to go beyond Ukraine.”
Blinken also reiterated the position of US President Joe Biden that the possibility of extending existing US sanctions to directly target Putin was still “on the table” if the situation escalated.
