A bloody battle is taking place in Azovstal, the steel plant that has become the last stronghold of the ruined port city of Mariupol.
Fierce fighting has resumed there between Russian forces and the last Ukrainian defenders of Mariupol. Despite efforts to evacuate civilians, hundreds remained in the compound, including 30 children. “The enemy has entered the territory of the factory for two days. “I am proud of my soldiers, because they are making superhuman efforts to keep Russian troops away,” said Azov Battalion Commander Lt. Col. Denys Prokopenko.
“The situation is extremely difficult, a factory worker showed the Russians the door to the underground tunnels. “We are worried, but we will continue to fight.”
Russia says it will stop the attack on Azovstal and launch a three-day ceasefire today. Previous ceasefires in this war, however, have not had convincing results. The plant, located south of the port city of Mariupol, is the scene of a recent desperate resistance against Moscow’s occupying forces. Until recently, Azovstali was a key player on the global stage, producing 4 million tonnes of steel a year, most of which it was exported.
Its owner, Metinvest Holding, Ukraine’s largest steelmaker, says that from London’s Shard skyscraper to the Hudson Yards in Manhattan and Genoa’s San Giorgio Bridge, which replaced the collapsed Morandi Bridge, Azovstal-made steel was used in some of the most famous monuments in the world. Now, at least 150 factory workers have been killed and many more are missing, says Yuriy Ryzhenkov, CEO of Metinvest Holding. Before the war, the plant employed 11,000 people, he recalls, while company staff included family dynasties that produced steel generation after generation.
