Observers of the stars were confronted with a stunning and unusual sight last night.
Shortly after 3:30 a.m. Monday, the Earth’s orbit was positioned for a few minutes directly between the Sun and the Moon.
At that time the Moon fell completely under the shadow of the Earth, temporarily engaging in a dark shade of red.
Its color was created by sunlight projecting through the Earth’s atmosphere onto the moon’s shady surface.
The lunar eclipse coincided with a special event, a super Moon. This is when the Moon is at its closest point to the Earth in its orbit and thus appears larger than usual.
About an hour and a half later, the only sunlight that reached the Moon passed through the Earth’s atmosphere, turning it red.
In Europe, the phenomenon was only visible for part of that time due to the onset of sunrise, but on the American continent, areas under clear skies created a complete spectacle.
