Boris Johnson has openly stated that he will not support any Conservative candidate who intends to take the Prime Minister’s place after his resignation. He argued his decision with the fact that, as he said, he does not want to “damage the chances of any of them in the election”.
Boris Johnson: I don’t want to talk more about it, there is a race going on and I wouldn’t want to hurt anyone’s chances by offering my support. As I have made clear before, I think we need to focus more on the people, on those who elect us, on the jobs they do, on their hopes, talk more about the future we are trying to build and as much as possible the less we talk about politics at Westminster, the happier we’ll all be in general.
The Prime Minister or the new Prime Minister of Great Britain will have to deal with the crises of the time, such as high inflation, the decline in foreign trade after Brexit, the tense geopolitical situation after the Russian attack on Ukraine, the world hunger crisis and the departure from fossil energy.
In foreign policy, the country will be paralyzed for several months because of the way Johnson proposed to leave. Now follows a phase of uncertainty until the new government is in office.
This does not help in times of multiple crises and the need for cooperation in the international arena. Johnson admitted that the present looks dark, but he sees “a golden future” for the new government team.
