Underground attempts to secede from the Bosnian Serb entity take another hit. The High Representative in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Christian Schmidt, thwarted Republika Srpska’s attempts to transfer state property.
Schmidt suspended the decree of the president of this ethnicity, which two days ago was sanctioned by Great Britain, Zeljka Cvijanovic, for the promulgation of the Law on Immovable Properties used for the functioning of public authorities.
Schmidt said the ruling would run until the decision of the Constitutional Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina. “Only the state of Bosnia and Herzegovina can control state property,” Schmidt said.
Anyone who does not respect the decision of the High Representative can be punished, as such a thing is considered a crime. “The decisions I took do not in any way minimize the status of the Republika Srpska entity,” he explained.
“I call on everyone in Bosnia and Herzegovina to sit down and discuss together the future of state property, to reach a reasonable solution to state property, an issue that has been unresolved for 14 years. Politics in a democracy requires everyone to contribute to the state, and not just look at their own pockets. Everyone in this state should get their share right, be they entities or cantons. “But there should be no unilateral decisions.”added the senior official.
The law on immovable property was published in the Republika Srpska Official Gazette on April 5th, after being approved by the entity’s Parliament on February 10th. The law provided for immovable property owned by the state of Bosnia and Herzegovina to become the property of Republika Srpska.
