Britain has published a series of new laws, which expand the list of possible sanctions against Russia, if the Kremlin decides to invade Ukraine.
The announcement comes as Western allies are taking action, warning Moscow of the consequences it could face if it moves toward Kiev.
Britain said the legislation introduced would allow for the imposition of harsh sanctions on Kremlin-linked individuals and those involved in destabilizing Ukraine.
The new legislation also includes the power to sanction individuals who are or have been involved in “destabilizing Ukraine or undermining and threatening Ukraine’s territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence.”
Also subject to sanctions will be those “who have benefited or supported the Government of Russia” in the event of an invasion.
Russia has amassed more than 100,000 troops near Ukraine, raising concerns that Moscow is preparing a new invasion of the neighboring state.
Russia denies plans to invade Ukraine.
On February 10, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said the Russian military build-up near Ukraine had sparked the most serious security crisis in Europe in decades.
