A British Virgin Atlantic airliner flying to New York was forced to return to London where it became clear that the co-pilot was not qualified to fly as it had not completed final tests, the airline announced.
The Airbus A330 had about 40 minutes to fly to New York JFK Airport on Monday, when the two pilots noticed what the company would later call a “recruitment error,” the network wrote. Telegraph .
The aircraft captain was not a qualified trainer and consequently could not fly with an auxiliary pilot who had not completed training protocols, the agency reported.
Upon returning to Heathrow Airport, the Assistant Officer was replaced and the flight resumed its journey, arriving at its destination 40 minutes late.
The company said the pilots were licensed and qualified to operate, including the captain who had flown thousands of hours in 15 years with Virgin Atlantic.
While the assistant officer had come to work in 2017, and was waiting for the “final evaluation” of the flights.
“Due to a staffing error, the VS3 flight from London Heathrow Airport to New York-JFK resumed its departure shortly after take-off,” the statement said.
“The officer who flew with the experienced captain was replaced by another pilot, according to Virgin Atlantic protocols and industry standards,” the spokesman said.
