A UK court on Wednesday (April 20th) issued an official order for the extradition of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange to the United States to face trial for leaking secret files related to the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. .
The decision now rests with British Home Secretary Priti Patel, although Assange still has 14 days to appeal any decision approving his extradition.
The April 20 ruling brings the long legal saga that took place in UK courts closer to completion.
But Assange’s lawyers have vowed to appeal any decision related to his extradition.
“No appeal has yet been filed by the Supreme Court regarding other important issues he raised earlier,” his lawyers said in a statement last month.
“That special appeal process, of course, has not started yet,” they said.
Assange was denied permission to appeal to the UK High Court against the measures for his extradition to the US, where he could face life in prison. Washington wants to prosecute him over the release of 500,000 secret military files related to the US-led wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.
In January last year, the 50-year-old Australian appeared to have won a holiday on the grounds that he risked suicide if held in solitary confinement in a high-security US prison.
His supporters have previously argued that his physical and mental health has been severely affected by his stay in a high-security prison in south-east London. He has been behind bars because he is seen as a danger of escape, as in 2012 he escaped a suspended sentence, which was related to allegations that he sexually assaulted two women in Sweden. Assange has been at the Ecuadorian embassy in London for seven years
