Three human traffickers have been caught in France after posting on social media videos endangering the lives of migrants crossing the Strait into England.
Mohammed Fiate, a 22-year-old Syrian, and two 25-year-old Kurdish Iraqis, Sharam Shorsh and Ali Hardin, were jailed yesterday for their role in the brutal immigrant trafficking of $ 1.5 million.
They had helped smuggle 545 people into England over a five-week period this summer, according to court documents reported by local media.
Up to 83 people were crammed into unsafe dinghies, in what prosecutors called the total negligence of human traffickers.
Their sentencing comes days after the tragedy with 27 migrants dying from the sinking of their boat off the French coast, which adds to the hundreds of other lives lost in the tragic attempts to cross the strait in the last two decades.
The suspects were arrested together in their car when they were stopped for a routine check in the port city of Calais two months ago, while life jackets and floating devices were found in their vehicle.
Further investigations uncovered notebooks with the names of 151 migrants as well as cell phones with traffic information.
Meanwhile, videos of people leaving by dinghy were discovered on the TikTok network, the French daily reported. La Voix Du Nord.
In court documents reported by the British Daily Mail, prosecutor Adeline Depardon said: “What stands out is the total neglect of people’s lives, the treatment of people as a business tool.”
“At no point did you think about the migrants who died at sea, but only about yourself.”
The trio demanded from € 2,000 to € 3,000 per passenger, but most of the money was not recovered as it was passed on to the biggest criminals.
The three detainees deny the allegations, saying they play only minor roles, under pressure from a top trafficker known by the nickname Souca.
Shorsh claimed to be a mechanic and was asked to repair raft engines for € 1,500. He added that “he had a sick father” and that he regretted his actions.
Fiate claimed it had been ordered to transport the migrants with threats that they would rape the woman, but sources told the Daily Mail that his behavior resembled that of a high-ranking trafficker.
Fiate was jailed for four years, Shorsh was sentenced to two years in prison, while Haldin was sentenced to one year in prison.
