In Burkina Faso, more than 1.5 million people inside the country were forced to flee their homes in 2021 due to terrorism, reports Anadolu Agency (AA).
According to a report by the National Emergency Relief Council (CONASUR), 1,579,000 people were displaced last year due to terrorist attacks in the country with a population of about 28 million.
61.66 percent of IDPs are children, 22.34 percent are women and 16 percent are men.
It is estimated that 16 percent of these people were from the Sahel, 8 percent from the Central-Northern region, and 6 percent from the northern region.
Al-Qaeda and DEASH-linked terrorist groups in neighboring Malin have carried out frequent attacks in the north and east of Burkina Faso since 2015.
Although Burkina Faso conducts joint military operations with its other Sahel neighbor, Nigeria, it cannot weaken the power of terrorist groups based in Mali.
According to UN figures, 17,500 people were forced to flee the country in 2021 for security reasons.
