Ottawa yesterday expressed ‘very concerned’ to Chinese pilots for their maneuvers in the sky as they tried to control the maintenance of sanctions against North Korea.
The Canadian bombers were deployed in Japan as part of an international effort to maintain sanctions on North Korea.
But while conducting their inspections they encountered Chinese shooters who according to them had performed dangerous maneuvers that could almost lead to air collisions between aircraft.
Canada said yesterday that the maneuvers of the People’s Liberation Army’s fighters “did not comply with international air safety standards” in some cases.
The Canadian military said the Chinese pilots had unprofessional and dangerous behavior during recent meetings with Canadian aircraft in international airspace.
They said that in some cases Canadian crews had to quickly modify their flight path to avoid “possible collisions with intercepted aircraft”.
The statement said that such interactions in international airspace during UN-approved missions were becoming more frequent and therefore were addressed in the diplomatic channels of the countries in question.
Foreign Minister Melanie Joly said she was concerned about the incidents which come weeks after the signing of important diplomatic agreements between Ottawa and Beijing.
Relations between the countries were strained in 2018 with the arrest of Huawei Group chief Meng Wanzhou in Vancouver, under a U.S. mandate.
China in turn detained two Canadians, diplomat Michael Kovrig and businessman Michael Spavor – in response.
