Spain over the last weekend has recorded the lowest number for this year with about 21 thousand more cases of COVID-19.
These figures come despite the fact that the Ministry of Health confirms an increasing number of disturbing coronavirus species from around the world.
The first species discovered in the UK has been discovered nearly 900 times in Spain. The Spanish ministry said it was more contagious and could be more deadly than other types, but added that it would not drastically affect vaccines.
“It is expanding more slowly than expected. “Maybe because the measures we have taken have helped prevent its spread,” said Fernando Simon, Spain’s chief epidemiologist.
Although the new species has been discovered less than 1,000 times, it has become prevalent in the regions of Asturias, the Balearic Islands, Cantabria and Catalonia.
Meanwhile, Spain has discovered 15 cases of the first type detected in South Africa, a type which according to the ministry makes vaccines less effective.
South Africa even canceled the distribution of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine after it was found to have little effect on the mutation-induced COVID-19.
Spain has confirmed two small eruptions of this kind. One that stems from a group of travelers who went to Tanzania and another group of four cases probably related to this type of virus.
The Ministry of Health announced that it is studying four other potentially threatening new virus species.
Over the weekend, Spain confirmed another 535 deaths from the coronavirus. The country has administered over 3 million doses of the vaccine, with almost 1.2 million receiving both doses needed.
