Heavy rains, violent winds, hurricanes and flash floods are expected in northern and central Turkey after a flood weekend reportedly claimed the lives of at least four people.
Bad weather warnings are in effect in 42 towns and villages, including the country’s capital, Ankara, where schools are closed. The situation is similar in the city of Gemerek, in the central regions of the country.
Three of the victims were recorded near Ankara and another in Karaman province, local media write. Rescue teams are also searching for a missing person.
Eight villages in the northern province of Kastamonu have remained isolated after damage to several roads. Last year, about 100 people died from weather-related violent events in Turkey, including flash floods, fires and droughts.
Such disasters have raised climate issues high on the political agenda, especially among young voters. A magnitude 5 earthquake shook the province of Van in the east of the country.
The quake struck in the early hours of the morning and the tremors were felt as far as the neighboring provinces, but thankfully they did not cause any damage to people.
