Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban warned of an era of uncertainty and war in Europe, as on May 16 the National Parliament elected him as prime minister following the victory in last month’s election by his party, Fidesz.
Orban, who was sworn in for a fourth term as prime minister, said his country faces a decade of war and a recession, but he vowed to protect jobs, family benefits and pensions.
“This decade will be an era of danger, insecurity and war,” he said in a speech to parliament.
The war in Ukraine and the policy of European sanctions, in response to this war, have led to an energy crisis and inflation, which, according to Orban, will cause “a period of recession and economic downturn.”
While Orban reiterated his complaints to Brussels that he was “abusing power” by undermining the sovereignty of member states, he said Hungary’s country over the next decade is in the EU.
He also said that Hungary would not block EU sanctions against Russia over its occupation of Ukraine as long as they did not pose a threat to Hungary’s energy security.
Hungary and other member states, including Slovakia and the Czech Republic, are opposing the proposed EU sanctions. Diplomats in Brussels are currently negotiating a new package of sanctions, which requires the approval of all 27 bloc member states.
Orban has clashed with the EU over various issues, most recently over LGBT community rights and rule of law issues. He said that Hungary’s membership in NATO has never been more important./REL
