The vote of emigrants and the most optimal model to enable it, has been the focus of talks that CEC Chairman Ilirijan Celibashi held in Athens with Greek Interior Minister Maqis Voridhis.
Although a long-standing promise of Albanian politics, so far it has been precisely politics that has used the emigrants’ vote for micropolitical gain.
It seems that this time, more than politics, this issue has been left in the hands of technical experts, so for Mr. Celibashi, the visit has been packed with meetings with experts on the issue.
The focus of the Albanian side’s research has been the Greek model of the diaspora vote, and the problems arising from the mandatory procedures of this law.
Greece has a law on diaspora voting, but according to Greek experts, the possibility of voting for Greek citizens abroad is very complicated and difficult, so in talks between the two sides exchanged views on concrete solutions and improved procedures in order to diaspora voting to be conducted simply, effectively and without prejudice.
Both countries also analyzed the models of the countries in the region, where the model of Kosovo and the Bulgarian one, seem to be quite advanced and quite practical.
Mr. Voridhi praised the contribution of Albanian emigrants in Greece and the Greek minority in Albania as solid bridges that have overcome over time stereotypes and disagreements between the two countries.
Mr. Celibashi was accompanied by the Albanian Ambassador to Athens Luela Hajdaraga and a group of legal experts.
Mr. Voridhi is expected to pay a working visit to Tirana soon.
