Pope Francis has apologized for the abuses that have taken place for decades against children belonging to the indigenous community in Catholic schools in Canada, expressing his indignation.
After meetings with indigenous groups Inut and Metis, where he heard stories of suffering, discrimination and other forms of abuse against them the pope said he apologized.
The Holy Father spoke of a sense of misery and shame for those members of the Catholic Church who ran these schools,
“I feel ashamed and sorry for the role that some members of the Catholic Church, especially those in charge of education, have had in these things that have hurt you, and the abuses you have suffered, as well as for the lack of respect that has been shown. to your identity, your culture and your spiritual values. For their behavior I apologize to God, and I want to tell you that I am very sorry about that.
More than 150,000 children belonging to the indigenous community were forced to attend residential schools in Canada, and more than 60 percent of them were run by the Catholic Church. Hundreds of people, including family delegates supporting the indigenous group, gathered to hear the Pope’s late speech.
