Four days of efforts last week to put out the fire on the island of Sazani highlighted the equipment of 120 civilian emergency forces, those of the army and firefighters of Vlora.
Just like a year ago when Llogara was engulfed in flames, firefighting came through helicopters and water jets coming from several EU countries. This aircraft coming from Greece enabled the extinguishing of the fire in Sazan.
One week later, Prime Minister Edi Rama submitted his application to be part of the EU Civil Protection Mechanism to EU Commissioner for Crisis Management Janez Lenarčič, who is based in Tirana.
“Albania’s membership in this EU of civil support is a very significant step, but also a great relief for us, if we take into account the needs we have. It is not just about receiving, but also about giving.
At a time when the Sazan event once again highlighted the equipment of Albania with fire extinguishers, how can our country contribute to the EU civil defense?
“When we talk about a fire that someone comes and gives us help, it is not to mourn because this is what all the most powerful countries do. Greece faces much more intense fires than we do, and all countries and cope with it through this mechanism. This is not because we want it or because we now remember it but because of the reforms we have made. “Albania has the parameters to become part of this mechanism.”
EU Commissioner for Crisis Management Janez Lenarčič said that a summer with many fires is foreseen and that the readiness of EU countries to help will be monitored, as the planes are not in Brussels.
