Foreign Minister Olta Xhaçka was at a conference with Germany’s Special Representative for the Western Balkans, Manuel Sarrazi. In her speech she said that the war in Ukraine has created insecurity for instability in the region.
Xhaçka said that Albania has met the conditions and it is time to set a date for holding the first intergovernmental conference for Albania.
Xhaçka: Today is the time to act and make tangible achievements. Starting, of course, by setting a date for the first intergovernmental conference and necessarily continuing by articulating a clear and tangible vision of integration for each country in the region, especially in areas where today there is more tension and potential for conflict. And let us not forget that the potential for conflict in our region, even before the start of the war in Ukraine, has been higher than ever at any other point in the last 20 years.
In this context, giving a clear perspective and a firm and determined commitment to Bosnia and Herzegovina and Kosovo, starting with the deserved visa liberalization for Kosovo, would be welcome and useful steps.
I guaranteed Mr. Sarrazin that Albania, as it has traditionally done, will continue to be a factor of stability in the region. Just as Albanians everywhere will continue to be a factor of stability and guarantee for the Euro-Atlantic perspective of the region.
This is the reason why Albania today has undertaken very bold regional initiatives and why Albania today is playing such a first-hand role alongside allies and partners also on the issue of Ukraine.
But of course this is not an effort where the work and dedication of Albania are enough. We need the firm and credible commitment and commitment of the EU to all allies, especially at a time when the crisis in Ukraine has created so much uncertainty and destabilization. We need EU support not only through advancing the integration process but also by including us, as in the case of the pandemic, in support packages to overcome the consequences of war.
