The Covid 19 pandemic in its first year (2020) due to mobility restrictions hampered the treatment of patients in all diagnoses, while the greatest risks were for people with cancer who failed to reach treatment and diagnosis in time thus increasing the flow of treatments in 2021.
According to official data from the Ministry of Health, in 2021 about 23 thousand people were treated with radiotherapy in public hospitals alone, with a 20% increase compared to 2020, but the number of treatments was slightly lower than in 2019.
According to the data of the Institute of Public Health, based on the data of the national cancer registry, every year in Albania appear about 6000 new cases of tumors.
Tumors cause over 16% of all deaths (the second leading cause after cardiovascular disease). Every year over 3600 people lose their lives from tumors. About 10% of deaths from tumors are under the age of 50 years.
The most common tumors are lung tumors with about 800 new cases per year and breast cancer with about 700 new cases annually. IPH data show that the trend of tumors in the Albanian health system has been increasing over the last three decades, mainly due to the increase in the average age of the population, but also for other reasons related to lifestyle or environment.
This tendency is especially expressed in the level of use of health services related to tumor diseases. The data show that breast and colorectal tumors seem to have been on the rise, while stomach or lung tumors, although traditionally quite common in our country, are not growing. The expertise of ISH shows that these trends among tumors are similar to the global trends of this health problem.
Meanwhile, mortality rate trends for the vast majority of cancers have not been rising for several years. The risk of being affected and dying from tumors is much higher in men over the age of 65, but the opposite is observed in the under-65s.
With the exception of tumors of the female reproductive organs, mortality from other tumors is more common among males. The difference between men and women has been decreasing since 2012. Tumors, cancers, neoplasms are general terms for a large group of diseases; there are more than 100 types of tumors, with different frequencies in the population and with different risk factors.
