The famous White House dinner for correspondents was held this time in Washington after two years of cancellation due to the coronavirus pandemic. President Joe Biden did not spare praise for journalists, as he stressed that nowadays, a free press is more important than ever, referring to reports from the war in Ukraine.
“We honor members of the press, both national and local. Free media is not the enemy of people, on the contrary. At best, you are the guardians of the truth. President Kennedy once said and I quote “Without debate, without criticism, no administration, no country can succeed and no Republic can survive.” tha Biden.
The dinner was attended by journalists, media executives, administration officials and many well-known public figures in the country. Biden also made jokes about his age, or surveys that evaluate the work of his administration.
“I’m very happy to be here tonight with the only group of Americans who have a lower approval rating than I do.” said the White House chief causing laughter in the hall.
Everything took on a different tone however when he spoke to reporters reporting from the war in Ukraine.
“We have all seen the courage of the Ukrainian people because of the courage of the American journalists in this room and your colleagues around the world, who are on the ground, who have taken their destinies into their own hands. There is a growing mass misinformation, where truth is buried by lies and lies live as truths. “One thing is clear, a free press is more important than ever.” stressed Biden.
Through humor, the US head of state also gave a message to the Russian president, as he told comedian Trevor Noah that he could make jokes with the president of the United States and “he would not go to prison, as in Moscow.”
The White House Correspondents Association was founded in 1914 and has hosted dinners almost every year since 1921 to celebrate with journalists covering the presidency.
