Belgrade in Serbia and Tirana in Albania are the two most expensive capital cities in the region, according to the mid-year index from Numbeo, the largest database of living costs.
Belgrade’s index is 38.8%, while Tirana’s is 38.37%. This index measures the cost of living in relation to New York City, which has this indicator at 100%.
The cheapest in the region is Pristina in Kosovo, with an index of 26.3% of the cost of living in New York, followed by Skopje in North Macedonia (32.94%), Podgorica in Montenegro (34.52%), Sarajevo in Bosnia and Herzegovina (35.34).
The cost of living index (excluding rent) is a relative indicator of the prices of consumer goods, including groceries, restaurants, transportation and utilities. In the restaurant index, which is again a comparison of the prices of meals and drinks in restaurants and bars compared to New York, the cheapest is Prishtina, at 19.6% of the New York average, followed by Sarajevo (23.6%).
