Nine years after surprising the world by resigning from his post at the helm of the Catholic Church, former Pope Benedict XVI faces charges that bring back ghosts of child abuse that have eroded his leadership.
New data has come to light during a German investigation. They show that Josef Ratiznger failed to act on at least four cases of child abuse during his time as archbishop of Munich. This post, according to the BBC, he held from 1977 to 1982.
He himself has vehemently denied the allegations, but a new report on historical abuses, compiled by a German law firm, incriminated the former Holy Father. The allegations are that the abuse continued during his tenure, and that the person accused of him continued to remain active in church roles. Ratzinger, now 94, became the first Church leader to resign in more than 600 years, in 2013. Since then, he has led a largely quiet life in the Vatican City.
The new report notes that Benedict was informed of the facts of juvenile abuse cases during his time as archbishop, but chose not to take any action.
