The protest movement of farmers in the Netherlands against government restrictions on production has continued this week with the blockade of distribution centers, opposing the government’s new environmental rules which require reduction of cattle heads and production, of nitrogen emissions.
Dutch fishermen showed their support for farmers yesterday by blocking the ports, which caused almost all ferries to stop traffic on the northern coast and the Wadden Islands, causing long delays for shipping companies.
Yesterday, farmers used their tractors to block the entrances to warehouses with bales of straw.
The strike action was announced in advance as the farmers had called for the paralysis of the whole country” due to the restriction policies.
Airports had also made preparations for blockades on access roads, but traffic was reported to be normal on most of the country’s dense road network.
Police said they would intervene if demonstrators moved to block the entrance road to Schiphol international airport near Amsterdam.
It’s already been a few weeks since Dutch farmers protested strongly and in some cases violently against the government’s “absurd” policies to reduce the number of productive animals, in order to reduce nitrogen emissions.
Emission reduction measure required by the government would be equivalent to closing 30 percent of the country’s farms or reducing 30 percent of the animals on them.
