Russia’s population has shrunk by more than half a million by 2021, and coronavirus-borne COVID-19 is thought to be the main culprit.
Russia had a population of 145.5 million in January, nearly 700,000 less than a year ago, according to official data released by the State Statistics Agency, Rosstat.
Russian Deputy Prime Minister Tatyana Golikova has said COVID-19 is the main reason for this trend.

Officially, the Russian coronavirus task force has registered 329,000 victims with the virus since the pandemic broke out, but that number is believed to be twice as high.
Russian officials have said that this difference exists because the task force considers it a coronavirus death, only when the disease constitutes the leading cause of death.
