According to data published by the national disease control agency, an increase in the number of coronavirus cases has been reported in Germany.
The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) reported 64,340 new infections within a 24-hour period, an increase of over 20,000 compared to a week earlier.
The increase in the number of infections came after several states reported that Omicron had become a dominant variant in those regions. In the cities of Hamburg and Bremen, the dominance of Omicron has come in parallel with an increase in the rate of infection.
The seven-day incidence has also increased nationwide, although data is still considered incomplete after the Christmas and New Year holidays, because fewer tests have been performed and fewer cases reported.
On Thursday, the Robert Koch Institute said, 285.9 new cases were registered per 100,000 inhabitants over a one-week period, from 258.6 the day before.
