Cyberattacks are increasingly endangering regions such as the Western Balkans, Europe and wider global areas following the Russian attack on Ukraine.
The Parliament of Albania had invited on Monday, to a conference on current security challenges, retired general James Jones, whose company has a contract for cyber security with the Albanian government.
He emphasized that a deeper cooperation of intelligence services between NATO member countries is nowhere else more urgent than in the Western Balkans.
A few days after the cyber attack that hit government information systems in Albania, the Assembly invited retired General James Jones, former US National Security Advisor, whose company has since January of this year, to comment on the security challenges after the Russian attack on Ukraine year a contract with the Rama government to increase cyber security.
The head of the company, Jones Group, former general Jones stated in the conference with the Albanian legislators that cyber attacks constitute a fundamental risk for the normal functioning of democratic societies, for economic stability and for the continuity of free businesses around the world.
General Jones made these comments at the conference organized by the Parliament of Albania “Russian attack against Ukraine, security challenges and reshaping of geopolitics”.
The American authorities, he emphasized, have provided a network of cooperation in the face of cyber incidents to narrow the spaces for cyber criminals, which requires permanent vigilance, continuous infrastructural measures in the region.
“NATO member countries must increase efforts in the face of cyber threats as well as cooperation between intelligence agencies, which is nowhere more urgent than in this region. The unprovoked Russian attack against Ukraine demonstrated the value of real-time cooperation. This war is a lesson in the multiple benefits of intelligence agency cooperation for all NATO allies and non-NATO friends.” said Mr. Jones.
Government information systems suffered a massive cyber attack a few days ago. The officials claimed that they were cooperating with the Microsoft team, the Jones Group International team, as well as the teams of the Albanian companies to prevent this cyber attack from damaging the Albanian information systems.
The Rama government and Jones Group signed an agreement on January of this year to strengthen the security of digital systems.
In December, the personal data of nearly 690,000 people were leaked from state and private databases, but even in the general elections, a lot of personal data was released for almost all the voters of the capital.
Cyber attacks and the Russian attack on Ukraine were discussed at the conference as new security challenges.
The Speaker of the Assembly, Lindita Nikolla, said that the EU is further increasing its attention to the Western Balkans also in terms of security issues, while non-Western influences feed nationalisms and conflicts in the region.
“The integration of the countries of the Western Balkans into NATO has not gone parallel to the membership in the European Union. This affects security issues because it allows space for non-Western influences in the region.” says Mr. Nikola.
Cyber risks have increased along with the development of the cyber industry, which is bringing new challenges to democracies and traditional geopolitics. Cyberpolitics and cyberattacks endanger democracies on a regional and global scale, experts asserted, not only states, borders, but also the economy and society as a whole.
The cooperation of democratic countries was assessed as very important also in 5G technologies, in order for them to be as effective as possible in the economic development of the regions and for the benefit of the people, but not to endanger their security./Voice of America
