“Kosovo and Serbia are sovereign states, which have the right to choose their own foreign policy priorities,” a State Department spokesman said in a written response to VOA in Serbian.
The US State Department made the statement after Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic said that Kosovo, by applying for membership in the Council of Europe, had violated the Washington Agreement.
In September 2020, Kosovo and Serbia signed an agreement on the normalization of economic relations, known as the Washington Agreement.
With this agreement, Kosovo has agreed to a one-year moratorium on its efforts to join international organizations, while Serbia has agreed to a one-year moratorium on its campaign against the recognition of Kosovo as a state.
Under the Washington Accords, the moratoriums have already expired, but the US State Department has previously encouraged Kosovo and Serbia to continue them to enable progress in relations between the two countries.
