Left in oblivion for a long time now, Xhafer Deva’s house in Mitrovica has received attention.
A plan for its restoration raised doubts as to whether the figure of Albania’s World War II-era Albanian Interior Minister was being reconstructed.
The whole debate on the restoration of this building began after a reaction from the German ambassador to Kosovo, Jorn Rohde. According to him, the owner of this building was a Nazi collaborator and protagonist in the SS Skanderbeg division. According to him, the Holocaust crimes committed by the Nazis and their local collaborators should not be denied.
Historians, however, oppose the German ambassador’s claim.
Durim Abdullahu: He was an accomplice of Nazi Germany, a collaborator and a war criminal, but related to crimes, let’s say local within Albania. Xhafer Deva’s name can by no means be associated with the Holocaust, because as Minister of Interior, he repeatedly lists the Jews in Kosovo
They even say that the debate was generated by Serbia’s foreign policy.
Durim Abdullahu: The reaction of the German ambassador seems to have been surprisingly a mistake that originates from the propaganda of Serbian diplomacy.
Despite all this debate on the figure of Deva, the Ministry of Culture does not give up the restoration of this monument, on the grounds that its figure is not amnestied, but that the building belongs to the cultural heritage.
The project for the renovation of the building reaches the value of 300 thousand euros and aims to turn it into a cultural center.
