Canadian director Jean-Marc Vallee, who has won awards for well-known projects such as Dallas Buyers Club, Big Little Lies and Sharp Objects, has passed away at the age of 58.
The Oscar-nominated director passed away Sunday at his home outside Quebec City, Canada, while the cause of death has not yet been announced, according to People.
“Jean-Marc was creative, and trying things differently. He was a real artist and a generous, loving boy. Everyone who worked with him could not help but see this. He possessed talent and vision. He was a friend, creative partner and an older brother to me. Maestros will miss you very much, but he is comforted knowing that his beautiful style and the influential work he shared with the world will continue to live on“, Said in a statement his collaborator, Nathan Ross.
Born and raised in Montreal, Vallee studied film at Ahuntsic College and the University of Quebec in Montreal.
His feature film that made him famous was “Crazy”, which he wrote and directed.
In 2014, he won an Oscar nomination for the Dallas Buyers Club. The film also won three Oscars, including one for Best Actor, given to Matthew McConaughey, and another for supporting actor, Jared Leto.
He went on to win two Emmy Awards for directing and producing the HBO limited series “Big Little Lies,” starring Reese Whitherspoon and Laura Dern. In total, the series won eight Emmys and four Golden Globes.
He later directed and was the executive producer of the HBO series “Sharp Objects”, which was nominated for eight Emmy Awards.
Vallee has left behind his two sons, Alex and Emile.
