The United Nations has said the $ 1.7 billion pledged by international donors to help Yemen will not be enough to avert famine in the war-torn country.
At a virtual conference, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for $ 3.85 billion in program funding in Yemen this year.
But the promised figure was less than what the UN received last year.
“Millions of Yemeni children, women and men urgently need help to live. “The termination of the aid is a death sentence,” Guterres said after the conference.
The United Nations says about 16 million Yemenis – more than half the population – are malnourished. Of these, 5 million are on the brink of starvation.
Yemen has been embroiled in civil war since 2015.
Over 130,000 people have been killed and over three million displaced.
The conflict is taking place between the Iranian-backed Huthi rebel group and the Saudi-backed government.
Peace talks between the warring parties have failed to end the conflict.
