A magnitude 6 earthquake shook eastern Taiwan on Monday, 38 kilometers south of the city of Hualien. The quake had a depth of 10 kilometers.
A video of a quiet lakefront scene that suddenly began to shake violently was posted on Facebook by a national park in Hualien.
“This is a really big earthquake!… I hope everyone is safe!”was written in the post
An AFP reporter in Taipei said he felt strong tremors as local media reported that the quake was felt across the island.
Some earthquakes of magnitude or more can be deadly, though much depends on where the earthquake strikes and at what depth.
Taiwan has been hit hard by earthquakes, the worst of which was in 1999 with a magnitude of 7.6 where 2400 people lost their lives.
